Frank Lampard says Chelsea supporters should not expect too much of the club’s younger signings this season, and admits that he will not be able to develop individual players during his brief stint as caretaker manager.

Chelsea have committed north of £500million on initial transfer fees over the first two windows of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s ownership, bloating the first-team squad with seven new senior arrivals last summer and six more in January.

This aggressive recruitment has yielded little by way of immediate rewards, with Chelsea plunging to 12th in the Premier League. Lampard, the club’s third coach of the season, has presided over five consecutive defeats across all competitions while leaning more towards established first-team players than recent signings with his selections.

Mykhailo Mudryk and Benoit Badiashile have only started once under Lampard, while Noni Madueke appeared for the first time since Graham Potter’s dismissal as a 79th-minute substitute against Brentford. Enzo Fernandez and Wesley Fofana have featured more heavily in the last five games with varying degrees of effectiveness, but Carney

Chukwuemeka is yet to make it onto the pitch at all for his caretaker manager.

None of the younger new faces have been able to alter the trajectory of Chelsea’s torrid campaign, and Lampard believes it is unrealistic to believe they could do so.

“Every game is an opportunity for young players that have come here, and we also shouldn’t expect too much of players that have just got here,” he said. “Maybe that is part of the story this year of young players coming in and, because of the performance of the team, being expected to make a difference.

“In an ideal world, a club the level of Chelsea, you want to bring in those players with stability and performances and results where they can find their time, look at other players playing in front of them and realise what the standards are to get into the team.

“It’s clear it’s a very difficult moment for (all the players). Wherever you want to lay the responsibility for that, it doesn’t really matter to me in the short period. Some things are quite good about being interim: this is what it is, I can try and do as well as I can in this period.

“Other things you kind of go: ‘ok, of course this is longer term’. To develop a player in five weeks, from one thing to the finished article, is not going to happen. You also need the player to be of a level where they are going to produce.”

Lampard also responded to criticism of his team selections against Real Madrid and Brentford, which featured N’Golo Kante and Conor Gallagher behind only one recognised attacker.

“I had been playing 4-3-3 but I don’t think there’s one answer (to Chelsea’s scoring problems),” he added. “Sometimes, even against Madrid, I was criticised for being too defensive. For me, it was the only way to approach the Madrid game and we could have been 1-0 or 2-0 up and the whole tie then looks different.

“Brentford was different, but I mentioned managers have to compromise earlier. At the moment, where we are, there are things that I look at and think, ‘we can’t be that fluid like we’ve tried when we went to Wolves with 4-3-3 and we don’t win a game’, so there is not always an absolute answer after the event that’s an easy one. Do I want to play more free-flowing? Yes.

“When I was here before I think people thought we were too free-flowing at times. When I looked at my underlying nature of how we were playing in my first season here, we had one of the highest xG and against us was one of the lowest xG [expected goals] but we still conceded more than we should have done because there are different reasons sometimes.

“In the short term, I want to find some consistency in our work. That’s challenging sometimes because you have to put pieces of the puzzle together and, in just five games, that not always easy.

“The main part of the selection is the attributes of the players. If you feel like players can play in a back four, for instance, it is about what they are going to give you in a back four. With wingers, you feel do they know the role of the winger defensively or do they need time to learn that role defensively?

“If you don’t (make decisions that way), then you might not win football matches. I take those decisions on more footballing attributes than the motivational one. In a way, I expect everyone to be motivated here and I expect that to be the case.”

Chelsea are next in action against Arsenal at the Emirates on Tuesday.

U sustini nista nije rekao
